Purpose
Understanding why we write and who we write for.
Overview
It is important that students understand the purpose of any project before they begin. This initial step – identifying the audience, purpose and context – is very much a process-driven stage. A clear purpose sets the tone for the rest of the writing. In this book, we divide the overall purpose of a text into three categories: purpose, audience and context. These three components are closely connected, and students need to be aware of each before they begin writing if they are to produce something specific and considered.
